What is Mesotherapy? By Satya Hair

Historical Information

Injections into the skin for medicinal purposes have a long history in Chinese and Indian medicine. More recently (Table 1), Karl Baunscheidt 1847 was confident that medicine might operate even if it was injected superficially and experienced cutaneous injection at two millimeters.

Alexander Wood (a Scottish Physician) injected the first dosage of dermic morphine to relieve pain in a variety of circumstances in 1853. Bartolomeo Guala initiated systematic hypodermic treatment in a hospital in 1860, and Gaetano Primavera in Naples conducted the first experiment to determine the degree of medication absorption in the urine following hypodermic delivery in 1867.

The London Medical Society wrote in the same year about hypodermic injections, citing "the speed, intensity, and safety of the action, the production of a given effect with a lower dose of the other administrations, the certainty of the effects, the ease of application, and the absence of certain disagreeable actions of other drugs." Doctors injected distilled water into the dermis to treat arthritic pain during the Franco-Prussian war in 1870.

William Halsted discovered that intradermal inoculation of sterile water produced local anesthetic in 1885. A Venetian doctor, Pietro Orlandini, recommended dermal punctures for the treatment of specific forms of localized pain in 1894, and George D. Gammon and Isaac Starr documented the analgesic effect of sterile water inoculation into the skin over or near the pain in 1941.

Michel Pistor coined the word "mesotherapy" to describe the injection of medications into the skin's thickness in 1958. After reviewing preclinical and clinical experiments, Sergio Maggiori developed the term "local intradermal treatment" (LIT) in 200, to stress that superficial inoculation permitted obtaining the clinical benefit with a lower dose of the drug.

After reviewing preclinical and clinical experiments, Sergio Maggiori developed the term "local intradermal treatment" (LIT) in 2004 to stress that superficial inoculation permitted achieving the clinical impact with a lower dose of the drug.

Individual differences may make standardizing intradermal inoculation difficult. As a result, we recommend a customized needle inclination based on the patient and the body to be treated. There have been no randomized studies to examine the efficacy of inoculation in different dermal layers (superficial dermis or deep dermis).
